What are dental veneers?
If you have discolored, yellowed or chipped teeth, you can now solve the problem and return to having a white smile without any imperfection thanks to the aesthetic dental veneers.
The dental veneers are very fine shells made of porcelain, used on the front area of the teeth of the upper arch to conceal defects of shape, position, color and the size of the teeth. They are similar to false nails due to their delicacy and finesse (they are less than 1 millimeter thick), thanks to this thinness they appear transparent against the light and have a natural appearance.
They are defined as real dental prostheses, since, once glued, they will remain for about 10 years on the tooth. When a dental veneer is removed from a tooth, in fact, it will need a valid substitute to recover its normal appearance, since to apply it, the tooth will be slightly milled. They can also be integrated with partial crowns. In this case the tooth will not be filed down as much as before.
When to use dental veneers
- If you have teeth that have taken on an opaque or a yellowish color (for example due to smoking), the aesthetic veneers restore the white color, in a more effective way than various teeth whiting.
- When you need to repair chipped teeth.
- To improve the shape of the teeth, if you have teeth that are too small or too short: the aesthetic veneers remodel the shape, harmonizing all the teeth.
- If you suffer from bruxism and the tooth enamel has been consumed over time, a dental veneer which is a coating will protect your tooth.
- To improve the alignment of the teeth: an aesthetic veneer correct this defect, making your teeth regular.
How are dental veneers applied?
To apply the veneers the specialist will have to file a part of the dental enamel, then he will take a dental imprint and with a color scale he will then check the shade of white of your teeth.
The dentist will then prepare a model to send to the dental laboratory, which will build the aesthetic veneers.
The veneer will be placed on the tooth temporarily to check its shape, size and color and to determine if it is necessary or not to make any changes. If the veneer is right, then the specialist can cement it into the tooth.
How to take care of dental veneers
- Brush your teeth 3 times a day, after meals.
- Use dental floss at least once a day.
- Book a periodic visit to the dentist to check your dental situation.
- Bruxism damages the teeth and therefore also the veneers: talk to the dentist, who will advise you to apply a bite at night.
- Do not chew too hard foods: dental veneers are very resistant, but not like natural teeth.
- Also avoid smoking: beside the health damage, smoking is one of the main causes of tooth yellowing.
